We are working hard on Math. Currently we are working on Chapter 6, multiplying and dividing fractions. We have been working on Multiplying fractions and learning that we line up the numbers on the right and then count over to add the decimal. After Thanksgiving will be dividing decimals.
Here are the concepts we have learn so far.

New Math Program - My Math
The district has adopted a new math program. It is called My Math. This program provides everything for us. The students will have consumable math books that will include everything they need. It has foldables, vocab cards, in-class assignments and homework assignments. Because each student is given a book, I will not have extra copies of homework.
Include in this program is access to the website. The website has access to videos, examples, and the homework that can be printed off. It also has games to help the students with the concepts being taught.
The address is: http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do
The students will be given a username and password. Please log in and explore this website. It will be worth your time to know what is available to help your child with math. (Look for more information and usernames and passwords at a later date.)

Just so you know...
Math will be a little different than it has been in the past. I am encouraging the student to discover new ways to work problems. They shouldn't have to rely on the standard algorithm anymore. Instead, I will be challenging the students to think and discover multiple ways to solve the same problems. They will have to be able to explain their thinking to me (and on tests), so don't be afraid to ask your child, how they came up their answer.
I am requiring the students to pass off their times tables. Everyday, we will have a short (13 questions) timed test with a longer test (5 minutes, 100 problems) on Wednesdays. It is so important that the students memorize these facts, it will help them in their math this year and years to come. The students will have some opportunities to work on these in class, but help at home would be appreciated. You can find flash cards on the internet, I saw some at the dollar store, or contact me and I can print some out for you. There are also many games on the internet to help with these facts.

Homework
The students will be given math homework every night, Monday through Friday. They need to return it the next day. The homework will be a page from their math book. It is double sided, but still shouldn't be more than 10 problems. It shouldn't take the students too long to complete. It will be a review of what we did in class that day. The students are required to show all of their work. IF students forget their homework at school, they can go online and print a copy.
I am available before school to help if it is needed. If your child does not understand or cannot figure out a problem, I will be happy to help them. I am available most mornings beginning at 8:15 am.
