I can't believe this year is about over. This year has been a crazy one for me, personally. I have been blessed to have the students that I have had this year. They have made it possible for me take the time I needed to be with my family.
I have had fun this year. These students have been amazing. They are smart, talented, kind, helpful and funny. They have been easy to teach, fun to get to know and to be around. I couldn't have asked for a better year. Thank you, parents for raising such great kids. It was a fabulous year.
We've learned what we needed to and we've had fun along the way. So, bring on Summer...I think we are all ready for some fun in the sun, sleeping in and a little light reading (maybe that's just me)!
Check out the state floats on the Social Studies page!

This month is Spring Break and the signal to winding down and aiming for summer. This month we will be finishing our math book and beginning to review for the end of the year test. We will be finishing our science core. And we will begin working on memorizing states and capitals. We will also have one more major project, a state float.

Field Trip...Natural History Museum (sorry about the sideways pictures...I got a new computer and I don't know how to fix them, yet.)
March
This is a hard month for me. I don't know why it is...it could be that the weather is really turning nice with green grass, budding trees and flowers...it's Spring and Spring Fever. I want to be outside in the sunshine enjoying the green and the fresh air. I know the students would much rather be outside, as well.
This month also brings a final push toward the end of the year and the tests that comes with that. We still have lots to learn. In science we will be learning about magnets and electricity. In social studies we have the age of invention and states and capitals. And in math we will finish up dividing fractions then move on to measurement and geometry.
We still have lots to do before the end of May, but with a little hard work, dedication and a little bit of fun, we can do it.

Valentine's Day fun...here's some pics of some crazy fifth graders. You gotta love 'em!
Discovery Gateway
The fifth graders received a visit from Discovery Gateway and Reaction Time. This is program where the students are able to learn about chemical and physical reactions. The kids watched as our presenter, Skye, demonstrated chemical and physical changes. She set some powders on fire and they burned different colors, she show how bases and acids changed cabbage juice, she demonstrated acids in Mrs. Rudd's stomach, and she introduced the kids to Freddy (ask the kids). Then the kids got to try their hand at some experiments, mixing different solids and liquids and deciding whether or not they are chemical or physical changes.

Excellence in Service award
Congratulations to Miss Roach. The PTA and Mrs. Rudd presented Miss Roach with this award. The fifth graders sang to her and demonstrated rhythm. Mrs. Rudd read a tribute to Miss Roach. Here are a few pics of the meeting.

January. Welcome back to school. The weather has been really nice so far, but over Christmas it got cold. Please remember to send a coat, scarf, gloves, etc with your students. Students will be required to go out at recess unless it is called an inside day.
With the new year, comes new challenges. We only have five months of fifth grade left and it usually means that we will be working hard to accomplish all the fifth grade core and reviewing. We have some fun and interesting topics coming up.
In Science: Genetics, magnetism, electricity and earth changes.
In Social studies: Civil War, presidents (report coming in February), States and capitals (report and float coming in May) and much more.
In Math: fractions, geometry, measurement and more.

December. This month is going to go by way too fast. We only have three weeks before Christmas vacation. And, as usual, I will try and fit way too much in. We will have math lessons, science lessons, social studies, music, and art lessons. December is one of my favorite times of year, there is a lot of fun and learning that comes in this month.
Please remember that temperatures are getting colder. I know that fifth graders can make decisions on what they wear and whether or not they bring a coat to school. Be aware that students will be required to go out to recess and they need to dress appropriately. Also, by putting names in their coats, gloves, hats, scarves, etc, the students will be less likely to lose their items.

We the People - 5th grade program
I am so proud of these kids. They worked so hard to learn these songs. They were absolutely amazing!
Here are way too many pictures of a great program.
November. This is the month of our program. It is November 11 at 2 pm. This is our big focus for the month. We singing and practicing and singing and singing. I am sure that the students will be sick of these songs. They are doing well and I am pleased at their progress. I love doing these programs, but am so glad when it's over, no more pressure.
We will be welcoming guests into our classroom for three weeks. We have two UVU students coming to visit and teach a few lessons for social studies. I know that these students will make the college students feel welcome.
Check out the picture page for some fun Halloween pictures and red ribbon dress up pictures.

This has been an amazing start of the year. The students that I have are AMAZING. I feel truly lucky to be teaching each and every one of them.
October brings cooler weather and that means that the students will need to dress appropriately for the weather. Students are required to be outside unless Mrs. Rudd calls an inside day. Please send jackets or coats, gloves, hats and boots when appropriate. Students will not be allowed to stay inside without a note. The students need that fresh air after being cooped up for most of the day.
We have been busy in our class this past month. We've been working on place value, multiplication and division. We've learned about the scientific method and had some fun experiments practicing the method. We've learned about explorers, colonies and now, the American revolution. I look forward to teaching the kids more division, more American History, and in science, we are going to start our matter unit. And, best of all, we are getting ready for our program on November 11.
We had a fun time on our field trip on September 26. The students are so kind to each other, making sure that they are all included and that everyone is having fun. It was fun, for me, to watch them interact, watch them laugh, and having fun with each other. It was fun to watch what they chose to play and who played together. This was an experience for the teacher to see the kids in an atmosphere that I normally wouldn't see. I enjoyed my time with them and I could see the fun and excitement that the kids had. We brought them back exhausted, but I know they had a good time. There are some pictures of the field trip in the pictures section.

Hi! My name is Miss Bird. Welcome to another year of school! I am THRILLED to be back and am so excited to be starting a new school year. It should be an exciting year, as always. I will be teaching Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music and anything else that I can fit in. I am invested in your child's learning and want them all to succeed. I will do all in my power to help them achieve beyond their best.
I look forward to getting to know all of you and your children, but first, a little about me. I am the youngest of six kids. When I was little, my dad was in the Air Force. It was the end of his career, but I did have the privilege of living in Idaho and New Mexico, as well as Utah. When he retired, I just finished the fourth grade and we moved 'home' to Utah. I attended 5th grade at Brookside Elementary and I feel that it's a great honor to be teaching here.
I graduated from Springville High School and moved on to Utah Valley University (UVSC) where I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 2006. I taught one year at Westside and then moved to my current job at Brookside. In my spare time I enjoy reading, writing, cross-stitching, collecting bears, hanging with my family, and my new obsession, playing Candy Crush.
A few of my favorites:
Favorite Color: Red
Favorite Season: Winter
Favorite Food: Chocolate, Popcorn, Lasagna
Favorite Drink: Wild Cherry Pepsi
Favorite Sport: Baseball
Favorite Animal: Bears (and a Brookside Tiger)
Favorite Book: The Sister's Grimm series
Favorite Hobby: Reading
Please note that I want to help these students reach their full potential. If there is anything that I can do to help, you can contact me before or after school, through the school's secretaries, Mrs. Clements or Mrs. Bills, at 801-489-2830 or through my email at [email protected].
